Informatics in Schools:
Sustainable Informatics Education for Pupils of all ages

26.02.-02.03.2013 at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, Germany
www.issep2013.org

Information technology surrounds us and from very early ages onwards, children are using it regularly. But in many countries Informatics Education featuring educational aspects provided by informatics is not part of compulsory curricula at schools, yet.

The International Conference on Informatics in Schools: Situation, Evolution and Perspectives – ISSEP – is a forum for researchers and practitioners in the area of Informatics education, both in primary and secondary schools. It provides an opportunity for educators to reflect upon the goals and objectives of this subject, its curricula and various teaching/learning paradigms and topics, possible connections to everyday life and various ways of establishing Informatics Education in schools. This conference also cares about teaching/learning materials, various forms of assessment, traditional and innovative educational research designs, Informatics’ contribution to the preparation of children for the 21st century, motivating competitions, projects and activities supporting informatics education in school.

The ISSEP series started in 2005 in Klagenfurt. Following meetings were held in Vilnius in 2006, Torun in 2008, Zürich in 2010 and Bratislava in 2011. The 6th ISSEP conference will be hosted by Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany.

Conference language is English.

Topics of the conference

ISSEP 2013 – Informatics in Schools: Situation, Evolution and Perspectives – has an ambition to be the leading scientific forum to support Informatics education as a compulsory part of general education – in different forms and at different stages of school, i.e. in primary and secondary education, in pre‐service and in‐service education of Informatics teachers, as well as in many supporting activities with clear links to Informatics. Computer Science education at the university level is topic of this conference only to the extent it relates to teachers’ formation and continuous education.

The conference focusses on educational goals and objectives of Informatics as a subject in primary, secondary and vocational education and their different realization in compulsory and voluntary courses. In order to reach such educational goals, papers addressing the following issues are highly welcome:

Main topics:

  • Sustainable Education in Informatics for Pupils of all ages
  • Connecting Informatics lessons to the students’ everyday lives
  • Teacher education in Informatics
  • Research on Informatics in schools (empirical / qualitative / quantitative / theory building / research methods / comparative studies / transferability of methods and results from other disciplines)

Especially:

  • National curricula and approaches to practice and establish Informatics in schools
  • Informatics topics in school beyond programming and algorithms
  • Technical education in Informatics courses and vice versa
  • Students’ perceptions of Informatics issues in everyday life
  • Exams in Informatics and measuring Informatics competences
  • Motivating children and teachers for Informatics
  • Learning Informatics outside the classroom: Research on and benefit of courses, events, project weeks at universities or companies, contest, etc.

We also plan panel discussions, workshops and a doctoral consortium. Contributions to the conference may also relate to them.

Panel discussion topics:

  • The contribution of Informatics to a solid general education
  • Informatics education apart from mathematics and programming

Workshops:

  • Informatics curricula for primary and secondary schools
  • Research on Informatics / Computer Science in Secondary Education
  • Teaching computing at school and training computing teachers

Authors are invited to submit high‐quality papers reporting on original unpublished research, novel didactical approaches and interventions, tools or other recent developments within the topics of the conference. Simultaneous submission to other conferences or workshops is not allowed. Each submission should belong to one of the following formats:

Paper formats:

  • Research and theory papers (8-12 pages)
  • Best practice papers / country reports (8-12 pages)
  • Work in progress / discussion papers (4-8 pages)

All submissions should be anonymized and must not exceed 12 pages formatted according to the Springer’s LNCS style. All papers will be subject to a double blind peer review process with renowned professionals. Accepted papers will be compiled into the ISSEP 2013 conference proceedings (with ISBN and online availability). Selected top‐quality papers will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.
